Fight Against Moving Body and Paint Shop

Online Petition

I believe that the decision by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to relocate its body and paint shop to a new building in Western P.E.I. as part of its rural development plan is ill advised because:

  • 1. The government has to pay mileage for employees to commute during the first year which will be approximately $200,000 of taxpayers’ money.

  • 2. The Provincial Auto Body Shop maintains the entire Provincial Government fleet: i.e. snowplows, salt and sand trucks, school buses (forestry, highway safety, etc.).

Eighty (80%) percent of this fleet is located between Summerside and Souris. The waste of manpower and fuel to transport these vehicles to Tignish for repairs is huge and taxpayers will foot the bill. The effects this will have on the environment are also significant.

  • 3. The public’s money could be better spent on our health care and education systems, or toward reducing our yearly deficit.

  • 4. The move is not creating new jobs for Western P.E.I.; it’s moving employees from one county to another at the expense of the taxpayer.

If you wish to let Hon. Robert W.J. Ghiz, Premier and Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister, Hon. Ron W. MacKinley, know of your disapproval of this departmental move, please complete the boxes below with your name and a valid email address and submit. The PEI Union of Public Sector Employees will administer the petition on your behalf.
