Stay Safe in the Heat – Important Reminders for UPSE members and all Islanders

PEI is expecting a stretch of very warm weather from today through Thursday, with daytime highs reaching 28–30°C (Humidex 33–36) inland and slightly cooler temperatures along parts of the coast. Nighttime lows will stay between 16–19°C, offering little relief.

Heat warnings are in effect because these conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for those working outdoors or in uncooled spaces.

Tips to Stay Safe:

Hydrate often – Drink plenty of water (avoid caffeine/alcohol).

Take breaks – Seek shade or cooler areas when possible.

Dress smart – Wear light, breathable clothing and a hat.

Watch for symptoms – Dizziness, nausea, headache, or extreme fatigue are warning signs.

Check on others – Co-workers, neighbours, and vulnerable individuals may need extra support.

If you’re working in the heat, be aware of your rights—employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations, including access to water, shade, and rest breaks.

Stay cool, stay safe, and look out for one another!
