UPSE Congratulates CUPE !

Dear UPSE Members,

We would like to congratulate our colleagues in CUPE on their recent success at the bargaining table for their healthcare members. This agreement includes important gains and improvements, demonstrating the strength of solidarity and collective action.

When one public sector union achieves a positive outcome in contract negotiations, it helps all unions. This is because the Employer cannot unfairly give better benefits to one group while ignoring others. If the Employer tries to do this, the other unions can act, such as seeking help from a third party, to ensure fairness. They can also point to successful negotiations by other unions, like CUPE, as a precedent to support their case. These victories encourage other unions and workers to seek better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

CUPE’s success shows that solidarity and active member involvement can lead to positive change. For UPSE, this win is a source of inspiration as we prepare for the expiration of our own collective agreement(s). Gains made by other unions set key examples, showing that improvements are possible when we stand together.

As each collective agreement gets closer to expiring, UPSE will reach out to gather your ideas for our bargaining priorities. Your feedback will help shape our proposals. All members will receive forms to share their thoughts, and those interested can offer to join the bargaining team. Your strong participation will ensure that the issues that matter most are prioritized in our negotiations.

Why does CUPE’s success matter to UPSE members? It sets a precedent. Employers are more likely to consider similar improvements when one union succeeds. It strengthens the bargaining environment. Public sector agreements often influence future negotiations for other bargaining units in both the public and private sectors. When one union secures gains, it shows employers they can offer improvements to others. It builds confidence and unity. Workers are encouraged to pursue better terms through these wins.

At UPSE, we are dedicated to building on this momentum. With your involvement, we can achieve real improvements in our next round of bargaining. Let’s stay strong, informed, and engaged. When unions succeed, all workers benefit.

In solidarity,

Karen Jackson,

UPSE President
